In dozens of states there are couples that share homes, raise children and remain committed to each other through good times and bad, but have been denied the basic right of getting married to each other. Today that changed and same sex couples in every state will have the same rights they enjoy in Maine and the other states that have legalized same-sex marriage."

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said a spending bill that won initial approval by a House committee today contains a big win for contractchicken farmers who have been punished by big chicken processors like Tyson and Perdue for speaking out. Contract farmers raise chickens for big companies, but it's actually the companies who own the birds and the farmers only get a small fee for each chicken they raise.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree is helping lead the push on a bipartisan bill to provide a tax exemption on the benefits volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel receive from their communities. The legislation, the Volunteer Responder Incentive Protection Act of 2015 (VRIPA), was just introduced in the U.S. House. A similar bill was signed into law in 2007, butthe exemption expired in 2010. Currently, volunteers must pay federal income tax on the modest incentives they receive.
