Says FCC decision to treat Internet like a utility is a victory shouldn't be rolled back
Today Congresswoman Chellie Pingree spoke out against a Republican proposal that would delay the FCC from enforcing rules that protect net neutrality.
Pingree, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, was speaking in a hearing on a bill that provides funding for the FCC. Republicans have inserted a clause that would block the FCC's recent decision to regulate the Internet like a public utility.
"The FCC did the right thing in standing up to protect a free and open Internet. They made a historic and common sense decision to regulate it like other public utilities. The FCC decision earlier this year was a huge victory for the millions of people who spoke up for net neutrality and a free and open Internet. And Congress shouldn't try to stand in the way of this common-sense decision by rolling back this historic ruling," Pingree said.
Pingree was speaking in favor of an amendment that would have stripped the bill of it's anti-Net Neutrality language, but the amendment failed in a party-line vote and Republicans on the Appropriations Committeewent on to pass the spending bill. The full House still has to take up the legislation.
