Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) issued the following statement in response to the Social Security Administration’s announcement that its beneficiaries will see a 5.9% increase in their benefit checks for 2022, marking the largest boost to benefits in four decades: “Social Security is a lifeline for veterans and millions of Americans living on a fixed income—including one in four Mainers—and the buying power of social security checks have diminished for years. With an average benefit increase around $92 a month starting in January, this will make a major positive difference in Maine, the oldest state in the nation. I’m thrilled by this increase, but Congress has the power to do more by passing legislation to strengthen Social Security for American seniors today and for generations to come.” The 5.9% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase also applies to veteran benefits. In Congress, Congresswoman Pingree is a champion of strengthening Social Security. She is a cosponsor of H.R. 4921, the Strengthening Social Security Act of 2021, and H.R. 4315, the Fair COLA for Seniors Act of 2021. ### |
