Pingree Announces $2.5 Million in Funding for Maine Public Transit Through CARES Act

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced the Biddeford-Saco-Old Orchard Beach Transit Committee (BSOOB) and the Maine Department of Transportation (Maine DOT) will each receive a grant from the Federal Transit Administration through the CARES Act, passed by Congress in March. BSOOB will receive $440,944; Maine DOT will receive $2.1 million.

“Maine’s public transit systems have been hard hit during the coronavirus pandemic, as ridership and revenue have both taken huge cuts. This funding through the CARES Act will help retain transportation jobs and make sure Mainers have access to reliable methods of transportation to get from home to essential services like the grocery store or work. I’m proud to have voted in favor of the CARES Act and am glad to see this support Portland and the Biddeford-Saco-OOB region in providing ,” said Pingree.

BSOOB will use the funds for transit operating and administrative expenses for the Biddeford, Saco, and Old Orchard Beach regions. Maine DOT will use the funds to support transit operations in the Portland area during the coronavirus pandemic.

Pingree previously announced FTA awards to both BSOOB and Maine DOT, also through the CARES Act.
