Calling for More Oversight After Congressional Facebook Hearings

Apr 11, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.—As Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg finishes two days of hearings on Capitol Hill, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) released the following statement on his testimony.

“I appreciate Mr. Zuckerberg’s willingness to appear before Congress and take responsibility for what happned under his watch.

“But two days of hearings have only stirred more questions and concerns. For many of us, Facebook is part of the fabric of our everyday lives. The last few weeks have offered shocking revelations of how the information we share on Facebook has been used without our knowledge.

“Facebook’s explosive growth has far outpaced Mr. Zuckerberg’s ability both to protect users’ privacy and to keep the platform from being used to undermine our democratic process. I echo my House and Senate colleagues who have said Facebook and other similar platforms may no longer be able to regulate themselves. As legislative options to provide greater oversight emerge, I will be giving them careful consideration.”
