UPDATE:
On February 6, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from implementing its plan to cull the federal workforce until Monday, February 10, 2025.
The judge also instructed the Trump administration to swiftly notify workers of the order freezing implementation of the “deferred resignation” program — which excuses workers from the administration’s return-to-office mandate and allows them to maintain their pay and benefits through Sept. 30.

Since January 20, President Donald Trump and advisors like Elon Musk have taken aggressive, sweeping actions to attack the federal workforce, which will harm all Americans who count on Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, and other critical federal services.
I am committed to a strong and nonpartisan civil service that can deliver for the American people. I oppose Trump’s actions to purge the civil service and try to force dedicated public servants off the job.
His deferred resignation option (also known as the “Fork in the Road” email) is part of his broader effort to dismantle the federal government.
If you received this memo, don’t be tricked or frightened into resigning. This is an unsanctioned offer intended to cripple agencies and undermine basic government functions. Know your rights!
As you navigate this challenging time in federal employment, you may wish to contact your union or HR representatives for more information.
If you are a government employee with information related to the politicization of the federal workforce, the firing of civil servants, and waste, fraud, or abuse of taxpayer dollars, you may reach out anonymously to the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee.
Our federal workforce is essential to a sound and stable government—and to our economy. My Democratic colleagues and I will do everything in our power to ensure these employees are given the respect—and the truth—they deserve.
