Funds will help clean up site in Biddeford and perform environmental assessments on other sites

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree today welcomed news that York County would receive $600,000 in Brownfield Grants from the Environmental Protection Agency to assess and clean up polluted sites for redevelopment. 

“With York County’s long manufacturing history, Brownfield funds have been especially helpful in cleaning up mill sites so they can be redeveloped for new uses.  They’ve already made a significant difference for several projects over the last few years,” said Pingree.  “It’s been great to see these unused, polluted sites become thriving economic drivers again.  This latest round of funding will be a big help in continuing that important work in York County.”

There were two Brownfield recipients for York County.

• $200,000 to the City of Biddeford to cleanup hazardous substances from former River Dam Mill complex off Laconia Street.  The site had been used for textiles production and was later used to store electrical transformers.  More information available at http://1.usa.gov/10di76e.
