Statement on release of Pacific trade deal text

Congresswoman Pingree says free trade agreement is a threat to jobs and environmental standards

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said the text of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal released today confirms that it would be a bad deal for Maine and the country.

"The TPP would undermine basic safety standards for imported food, medicines and even toys," Pingree said.  "And it would be a lousy deal for American manufacturers, putting them in direct competition with countries where workers are paid 65 cents an hour."

The trade agreement has been negotiated in secret, and Pingree and her colleagues protested and asked President Obama to release the full text.  That text was released this morning.

"We saw what happened to manufacturing jobs in Maine after NAFTA, and this deal looks like NAFTA on steroids," Pingree said.
