Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said a vote to reopen the Export Import Bank (ExIm) is certain in the next few days, now that a procedural hurdle has been cleared in the U.S. House. Tonight the House voted to accept a discharge petition—a petition signed by more than half the House Members to force a vote on a bill to reopen the Export Import Bank, which closed after Congress refused to reauthorize it this summer.
"The Export Import Bank supports American manufacturing jobs, and shutting it down means shutting down exports for some companies. We've heard from businesses in Maine and across the country that simply can't send their products to other countries without a guarantee from ExIm," Pingree said. "The delay in reauthorizing the bank is inexcusable and I'm glad we have taken a big step toward putting them back in business."
Pingree and her colleagues signed the discharge petition earlier this month, and tonight's vote accepting the petition means that House leaders will have to allow a vote on reopening the bank, as early as this week.
