Statement on End to Record Long Shutdown

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement regarding the three-week Continuing Resolution to reopen the federal government:

“After 35 days of federal workers rationing medicine, working second jobs, taking out loans, and being asked to work without pay, I'm relieved that President Trump has accepted our reasonable, bipartisan plan to reopen the government without a dollar for a wall that we were promised Mexico would pay for.

“This shutdown was entirely unnecessary and caused widespread hardship in Maine. I hope we can swiftly pass a full FY 2019 spending bill within the next three weeks and have a good faith debate about border security in Congress.”

As a member of the U.S. House, Pingree voted 11 times to reopen the government and pay federal workers. She also co-sponsored legislation to ensure federal workers receive back pay following the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
