Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement on news that a portion of Verso Paper’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay would be closed, laying off 300 employees. 

“This is terrible news, especially in light of other recent mill closings across the state.  I’m heartbroken for these workers and their families, and will do everything I can to make sure they have the resources they need to get through this difficult time.  While a number of factors have contributed to the decline of Maine’s papermaking industry and the loss of jobs over the years, I believe federal trade policies have certainly played a role.  As Congress considers future deals, we should be giving a lot of weight to consequences like this and their impacts on American workers.”
