Says Congress should focus on more important issues like emergency unemployment benefits
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree criticized Republican leaders in the House for spending one of the last days on the Congressional calendar before a month-long recess debating a politically motivated lawsuit against President Obama.
"This is a grudge-match lawsuit against President Obama and it's totally political," Pingree said. "There are so many other things that we should be working on right now, like equal pay for workers, lower refinance rates for student loans orrestoring emergency unemployment benefits that Congress let expire seven months ago."
Pingree said she regularly hears from Maine families who are struggling to find work and had counted on emergency unemployment benefits to make ends meet.
"These benefits can be the difference between putting food on the table and going hungry or between paying the rent and becoming homeless," Pingree said. "Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for focusing on their frivolous lawsuit against the President instead of the issues that make a real difference to working families."
House Republican leaders are bringing a bill up for a vote today that would authorize a lawsuit against President Obama. Legal experts from both sides of the political spectrum agree that the lawsuit would be thrown out by a court if it is filed.
