DC—Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) and nearly 60 other female members of Congress have jointly written to President Trump’s Secretaries of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to request answers as to the whereabouts, conditions of care, and lack of transparency surrounding the girls and babies who are among the 2,000 children who’ve been separated from their families by his zero-tolerance immigration policy.
“I am deeply disturbed that members of Congress haven't been permitted to visit detention facilities housing girls and babies who were separated from their families by the Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy. This weekend when I visit Texas, I hope to gain access to these facilities and better understand why the administration will not allow the public to see images of the conditions they are enduring,” said Pingree.
The letter to UDHHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and HHS Secretary Alex Azar was authored by Representatives Dingell (D-MI) and Kuster (D-NH) and cosigned by 59 other members, including Pingree. Read their letter here.
