Pingree Statement on June Medical Services v. Russo Supreme Court Decision

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that June Medical Services v. Russo, Louisiana’s abortion admitting privileges law, is unconstitutional:

“Today the Supreme Court once again affirmed that abortion access is a constitutional right. Louisiana’s admitting privileges law is identical to a Texas law that the Court struck down just four years ago. These laws are part of a national coordinated effort by right-wing activists to make Roe v. Wade irrelevant -- since abortion isn’t a right if you can’t access it. But today’s 5-4 decision made clear that Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land, and attempts to undermine abortion by requiring women to travel hours across state lines are illegal. This issue has been decided and settled: abortion is health care and any attempt to restrict it infringes on our constitutional rights.”
