Pingree Signs Two Resolutions to Impeach Pres. Trump, Urges Leadership to Reconvene Immediately

In the wake of an attempted coup on the United States government encouraged by President Trump, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today cosponsored two separate House resolutions to impeach President Trump for seditious acts. Pingree also joined her fellow House members in calling for the House to immediately reconvene to reckon with this act of insurrection.

“President Trump fanned the flames of sedition and encouraged an act of domestic terrorism. He is a direct threat to our constitution. The Vice President and Cabinet must invoke the 25th Amendment and remove this dangerous president from office. If they fail to do that, Congress must step in and once again impeach this lawless president,” said Pingree. “Congress must act quickly to protect our democratic institutions, ensure the peaceful transition of power, and set the record straight that seditious conduct, no matter when it occurs during a presidency, is grounds for removal. I’m calling for leadership to immediately reconvene House members so we can reckon with the assault on our democracy that our nation witnessed in horror on January 6.”

One impeachment resolution is co-led by Reps. Cicilline, Raskin, and Lieu; the other is led by Rep. Ilhan Omar. Pingree also joined a letter led by Rep. Malinowski, calling for the House to immediately resume its legislative session. Full text of the letter can be found here.

Pingree has been outspoken about the acts which took place at the Capitol on January 6. She voted early this morning to fulfill her constitutional duty and certify Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States.
