Pingree Chides Republicans for Going on Vacation Instead of Working with Dems to Stabilize US Economy

‘This is a chaos of their own making and will cause deep pain throughout Maine if it’s not resolved quickly,’ Pingree said.

With House Republicans heading home to their districts for the long Memorial Day Weekend, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) is calling on GOP members to forgo their vacation plans and “pay America’s debts as we always have.” Pingree released the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: House Republicans did not need to put America’s economy on the brink or put the hard-earned social security and veterans benefits of millions at risk. When Donald Trump was president, these same House Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling three times without hesitation and repeatedly voted for trillions of dollars’ worth of tax cuts for the wealthy. But the bill has come to the table, and they want to skip out on the tab and leave Americans to suffer the consequences. This is a chaos of their own making and will cause deep pain throughout Maine if it’s not resolved quickly. I urge House Republicans to forgo their long weekend plans and come back to Washington to pay America’s debts as we always have.”

This week, Pingree and more than 60 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) called on President Biden to prepare to invoke his constitutional authority granted in the 14th Amendment to uphold the full faith and credit of the United States and end Republican hostage taking of the economy that could trigger a financial catastrophe.

Pingree also called attention to the to the devastating impacts Republicans’ proposed budget cuts would have for Maine.
