Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement on the seven-count federal indictment of former President Donald Trump:

“To say that America is in uncharted waters this morning would be an understatement. According to reports, a former President of the United States will soon be arrested for a series of federal felonies including, in all likelihood, endangering our national security and obstructing justice. This will be Donald Trump’s second criminal indictment in just a few months, and this fresh indictment comes just weeks after Trump was found liable for sexual assault. 

“As dark a moment as this represents, that a former chief executive can be held responsible for their crimes is a sign not of America’s weakness but great national strength. Our legal system holding Mr. Trump to account represents an essential element to preserving our democracy. I know that Donald Trump will receive a fair trial and sincerely hope that justice will be done.”
