With Republican Speaker Chaos Over, Pingree Says We Must Get Back to Work to Pass a Bipartisan Funding Agreement

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement regarding Representative Mike Johnson’s election as Speaker:

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am relieved the House Republicans’ Speakership chaos is finally over, and I hope that the Republicans will get back to work on passing our appropriations bills.

“The relief that we can return to work is tempered by my concerns about Speaker Johnson’s extreme record and beliefs. It’s well known that Rep. Johnson was one of the chief architects of Republicans’ effort to overturn the 2020 election and tried to give away our Democracy to Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.  Meanwhile, as a member of the House, Johnson was the lead sponsor of a national ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, wants to ban abortion nationwide, and thinks we should cut Social Security and Medicare.

“Regardless of which Republican holds the gavel, the House must get back to work to pass a bipartisan funding agreement and avoid a government shutdown.”
