Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced that Yarmouth High School senior Sofia Joan Mavor has accepted an offer to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Pingree nominated Sofia to the Academy in December.

“Acceptance to a U.S. service academy is extremely competitive and reflects highly on a student’s scholarship, community service, and character,” said Pingree. “Along with all the other Maine students I nominated, Sofia has demonstrated an incredible commitment to serving our country and I’m very proud that she was accepted to the Air Force Academy. I wish her the very best in her time there.”

“The Air Force values of ‘integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all that we do’ resonates with me personally, and I am eager to uphold these values alongside others who are doing the same,” Sofia wrote in her letter requesting a nomination. “Even though this decision did not come naturally, it was a result of my self-reflection, examination, and ambition to serve our great country, the United States of America.”

Sofia’s parents are Brian Mavor and Lesya Stasiv. Contact information is available on request.

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes Members of Congress.
