Congresswoman Chellie Pingree celebrates opening of Bayside Trail in Portland

1.2-mile trail through center of the Bayside neighborhood will attract visitors and economic activity to city

Today Congresswoman Chellie Pingree spoke at the ribbon cutting for the Bayside Trail in Portland to congratulate the many partners who worked on the 1.2-mile urban trail.

"This is another great asset in the fantastic network of trails that is helping give Portland a reputation as one of the country’s most livable cities,” Pingree said.  “It has been very exciting to see this project grow from a vision into reality, thanks to the hard work and commitment of so many people in the community.”

A public-private partnership of several groups formed to plan, design, and build the trail, including the Trust for Public Land, Portland Trails, the City of Portland, the Bayside Neighborhood Association and the East Bayside Neighborhood Association.

The trail project was paid for with private donations, funds from the City of Portland, and help from federal programs that Pingree supported in Congress.

The ribbon cutting celebrated the initial phase of the project, a 1.2-mile trail from the Eastern Promenade to Elm Street.  Future phases of the project will fill out the trail with community art, small parks and benches, and continue the trail all the way to Deering Oaks Park.

“By creating something the whole community can take ownership in, these groups have built something more substantial than just a trail,” said Pingree.  “This project will help revitalize this neighborhood, bring people to the businesses in the area, and offer families a safe place to walk and spend time with each other.   I’m very excited to see this community grow around it.”
