Congresswoman Chellie Pingree hopes Supreme Court overturns California's Prop 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act As the Supreme Court began hearing arguments in two landmark cases about marriage equality, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement today: Legally, I don't believe there are any convincing arguments that support the discrimination in California's Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. And morally, I find these laws discriminatory, unjust, and shameful. They simply do not represent the values of freedom and equality that our country is built on. The government should not be able to deny equal protection for any couple who has made a commitment to love and care for each other. I am hopeful that the justices will rule in favor of equal protection, follow the lead of lower courts and strike down these discriminatory laws. Chellie speaking in support of marriage equality
