Project: Maine High-Performance Computing Hub Expansion

Recipient:
Colby College
Amount: $1,999,000
Description: The funding would be used to purchase additional high-performance computing equipment and enabling infrastructure for the Maine High-Performance Computing Hub, which will expand capacity to drive innovation, workforce development, and economic growth across the district and statewide. The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it will add computing capacity that supports precision medicine, artificial intelligence, the blue economy, and sustainable food systems—sectors vital to U.S. economic competitiveness and security. By expanding access to advanced computational capability, the project will advance national innovation priorities and enable more uniquely situated Maine-based organizations to translate data-intensive research and development into practical applications.

Project: Volunteer Maine Coastal Resilience Corps

Recipient: Volunteer Maine
Amount: $2,783,000
Description: The funding would be used for strengthening coastal resilience and sustaining Maine’s coastal economies through twenty service corps fellowships to build local capacity across coastal Maine. The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because across Maine’s coast, many communities, municipalities and regional organizations have completed significant planning to address coastal hazards, protect working waterfronts, and support the long-term viability of the marine economy but lack local capacity to implement these plans and projects. This project directly addresses that implementation gap by leveraging an existing statewide service network to provide hands-on support for project coordination, stakeholder engagement, planning implementation, and technical assistance to help communities build local partnerships and mobilize volunteers, ensuring that projects generate lasting community ownership and momentum beyond the period of federal funding.
