Unveils plaque marking 400th anniversary of Capt. John Smith’s landing on the island

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree participated in ceremonies today to mark the 400th anniversary of Capt. John Smith’s landing on Monhegan Island, unveiling a commemorative plaque that is a companion to another placed 100 years ago today.

“It was a complete honor to participate in the festivities celebrating Monhegan’s long and rich history. Even before the landing of John Smith and other European explorers, it was an important place to native people for centuries, including the Abenaki and Algonquins,” said Pingree. “It’s amazing to think of how many lives this island has touched and inspired leading up to today. Monhegan is truly an iconic Maine landmark and continues to represent our state’s unique way of life. As an island dweller myself, I couldn’t be more pleased to be a part of this moment in its history.”
