Pingree announces $340,000 federal grant for Knox County Regional Airport

Funds will be used to make much-needed repairs to runways, safety systems

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced today that Knox County Regional Airport will receive a $341,166 grant from the Department of Transportation to make a number of safety improvements.

“Maine’s airports are a critical part of our state’s transportation infrastructure, connecting our rural communities to the rest of the country,” said Pingree.  “I’m glad Knox County Regional Airport will receive this federal investment to make some much-needed repairs with no additional burden on local taxpayers.”

Funds will be used to:

  • Replace the airport’s existing 55-foot-high rotating light beacon
  • Rehabilitate a taxiway lighting system that enhances safe operations in low-visibility conditions
  • Rehabilitate 4,000 feet of runway to maintain structural integrity and minimize debris

Although still operational, some of the lighting at the airport dates from World War II and is in need of replacement.
