Pingree to Join Subcommittee Overseeing Appropriations for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) has been selected to serve on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs (VA) and Related Agencies. The subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes construction on military facilities worldwide, housing for military families, veteran health care, and VA operations.

This is Pingree’s third subcommittee on Appropriations. A member of the House Appropriations Committee since 2012, she will retain her seat on the Appropriations Subcommittees on Agriculture and Interior.

Statement from Pingree on the Assignment

"I’m excited to join the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs because of its significance to my state and the nation. A seat on the subcommittee will put me in a great position to advocate for programs and funding that are important to Maine.

“With Maine’s incredible level of military service, I have always made fighting for veterans a top priority of my work in Congress. This subcommittee assignment will allow me not only to secure funding that is vital to their care and success, but provide needed oversight of the VA’s operations.

“Military construction funds are instrumental in keeping Portsmouth Naval Shipyard competitive and protecting thousands of civilian jobs there, as well as maintaining our National Guard bases.

“As eager as I am to get started on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee, I don’t think my work on the Agriculture and Interior Appropriations Subcommittees has ever been more important—on everything from pushing back on the Administration’s anti-environment EPA to seeing what role the FDA can play in lowering the costs of prescription drugs. With Democrats now in control of the Appropriations Committee, we will have the chance to dig more deeply into a range of issues that demand our attention.”
