Pingree Statement on Introduction of Green New Deal Resolution

Press Release

Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) hailed today’s introduction of the Green New Deal, a roadmap to making the nation carbon neutral within the next 10 years while creating green energy jobs. An original co-sponsor on the bill, Pingree was one of the first lawmakers to publicly support the plan after it was originally proposed late last year.

“The Green New Deal sets a bold vision for dealing with the climate change crisis, which will soon escalate into a full-blown disaster if we don’t make the kinds of changes outlined in this plan. There are many good ideas in this resolution, but this is just the first step in the process,” said Pingree. "There is a lot of work to be done in the days ahead to iron out the details, like opportunities to work with farmers to trap more carbon in the soil. But I’m confident that we can pass something in the House and send it to the Senate, because the American people have demanded action.”

A longtime advocate for addressing climate change, Pingree yesterday hailed the first Natural Resources Committee hearing on the issue in eight years. She is making climate change a high priority of her work this Congress on the House Agriculture Committee and as vice-chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment.
