Statement on Earth Day 2015

We have to face new challenges for the future of our planet.

We have to face new challenges for the future of our planet.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement on Earth Day:

On the first Earth Day—45 years ago—very few Americans had even heard of global warming.  But now the science is clear and the signs of climate change are all around us.  It is the biggest environmental crisis of our lifetime.

On that first Earth Day, Senator Ed Muskie challenged a crowd of 50,000 people in Philadelphia to face the environmental problems of the day: polluted rivers, smog and litter.  Americans met that challenge and we can meet this one, if leaders in Congress face the facts about climate change and our over-dependence on fossil fuels.  I'm optimistic, but political leaders are going to have to do their part.
