Congresswoman Pingree praises the decision, saying the government has no business telling two people that they can't get married

"DOMA was a bad law to begin with and the Supreme Court did the right thing in striking it down. As voters and legislatures in Maine and states throughout the country have shown, the government has no business telling two people in a loving, committed relationship that they can't get married. Although there is still a long way to go for true marriage equality in all fifty states, as of today the federal government won't be standing in the way of that goal."

Pingree, along with Congressman Mike Michaud and Senator Angus King, signed on to a "friend of the court" brief in this case, arguing that the Supreme Court should overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.

Pingree, a strong and vocal advocate for marriage equality, has also cosponsored the Respect for Marriage Act, which would have overturned DOMA if the Supreme Court had not acted to do so.
