Marking 75th anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor
Washington, DC,
December 7, 2016
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement to recognize the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. “President Franklin Roosevelt rightly predicted that December 7, 1941, would ‘live in infamy.’ The attack on Pearl Harbor still represents one of the darkest days in American history, and 75 years have done nothing to diminish the terrible sacrifices made by the 2,335 service members and 68 civilians who lost their lives that day. “But within that nightmare, there were also many stories of resilience, courage, and strength that defined our nation’s response. Today we pay tribute to that spirit as well. “As we say goodbye to the generation of veterans who were there to see it firsthand, may we take special steps to ensure that their stories are told, their memories are preserved, and their bravery not forgotten.” |
