Maine National Monument Spared from President Trump’s Efforts to Undermine Land Protection

“I’m glad to see that the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is not on the list of 26 monuments that are targeted for review. I am hopeful that instead of getting mired in an unnecessary debate and bringing up old divisions, we will now be able to focus on getting the most out of the monument’s many benefits to the state and region. I look forward to its first full summer of operation. ..."

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement regarding President Trump’s order to review 26 National Monuments designated by past Presidents. Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument was not on the list.

“That said, I’m disappointed that President Trump is placing a cloud of uncertainty over other National Monuments designated by his predecessors. Even though he likely does not have the authority to overturn those designations, his actions still undermine efforts to protect our most significant natural areas for the public.”
