Statement on withdrawal from Trans Pacific Partnership

Pingree supports President Trump's executive action to withdraw from trade agreement she has voiced concerns about for years.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement today on President Donald Trump’s executive action to withdraw from the Trans Pacific Partnership.

I support President Trump’s actions today to withdraw the United States from the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Representing a state that has lost critical manufacturing jobs under NAFTA, I’ve viewed the TPP with skepticism from the beginning. When its details were finally revealed, I knew it would be a bad deal for Maine, which is why I voted against giving it fast-track authority in Congress. I am proud to be part of a broad coalition that has long opposed TPP because of the negative effects it would have on environmental protections, workers' rights, food safety, and more.

While I can’t say I agree with all of the actions the President took today—including crippling reproductive health around the world by reinstating the global gag rule—TPP is certainly one of the areas where we agree.
