President Obama plans to close detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Congresswoman Pingree says closure of prison "long overdue"

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement on President Obama's plan to close the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:

"There are already hundreds of terrorists being safely held in supermax prisons around the United States. These facilities are perfectly capable of taking the prisoners from Guantanamo.  But the practice of holding prisoners indefinitely without charging them or without a trial also has to come to an end.  The American justice system and the American prison system can handle these individuals.  Closing Guantanamo will save the American taxpayers money and will help make sure that justice is served.  It's long overdue."

Pingree visited Guantanamo with the House Armed Services Committee in 2011.
