Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement in response to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s announcement that he has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the Department of Justice’s investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 election:

"It's reassuring to see the Department of Justice respond to the crisis embroiling the investigation into President Trump's Russian ties. However, in order to have full confidence in the investigation, we need an independent commission that cannot be dismissed by the President.”
