Congresswoman Chellie Pingree voted today to support a deal to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Republican leaders had introduced numerous bills with the hope of stopping the agreement, negotiated between Iran, the United States and five other countries.
"We need peace and security in the Middle East, not another war. This agreement is our best hope at peace and keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of the Iranians. The alternatives are to do nothing and remain in the dark about what Iran is doing or get involved in armed conflict. It's far better that we embrace this plan and work with the other countries who are part of it to make sure Iran complies and doesn't develop nuclear weapons," Pingree said.
Pingree voted for a resolution approving of the deal and against a separate bill that would have prevented President Obama from lifting sanctions on Iran, as the nuclear agreement requires, until 2017.
