Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement on H.R. 38, the first piece of legislation relative to guns that the House has taken up following more than 327 mass shootings in this calendar year alone. Pingree will vote against the bill, H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The vote is expected around 4:30 p.m. today.
 
“Seeing this bill come to the floor a week before the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting is absolutely sickening. In 2017 so far, the U.S. has seen 14,398 gun violence deaths, including 327 deaths from mass shootings alone. In the never-ending current of these horrific tragedies, Congressional Republicans have blocked all efforts to enact common sense gun legislation. Now, they actually want to make it harder for local law enforcement to do their jobs. This blatant giveaway to the NRA is so far off-base from what the American people have been calling on Congress to do."
