Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement regarding the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to advance Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court:
“I’m extremely disappointed by the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to speed through Mr. Kavanaugh’s nomination despite yesterday’s extraordinary developments. I joined Democratic women colleagues yesterday to bear witness to Dr. Blasey Ford’s courageous testimony and attended the committee debate today. I absolutely believe her accounts of those events and the years of trauma it caused her. The Senate must delay a vote on this nomination until the FBI has investigated these and the other serious accusations against Mr. Kavanaugh.
“To be clear, I think Mr. Kavanaugh’s record and bias on any number of issues—women’s reproductive rights, gun violence, and presidential power among them—already makes him unfit to serve on the Supreme Court. But to ram through his nomination while so many questions remain unanswered is an injustice to the democratic process and the American people.”
