Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s deadly airstrike at the Baghdad International Airport, which killed General Qassim Soleimani, Commander of the Iranian Forces:

“Soleimani was an evil man whose death we do not mourn. Still, this move deliberately escalates conflict with Iran, increases the risk to American lives, and moves us closer to a senseless war without the consent of Congress.

“We need steady, disciplined leadership at this critical time. The President must de-escalate the conflict with Iran, have a concrete plan to protect Americans in the region, and engage with Congress going forward.”
