Pingree Calls for Floor Vote on Bills to Block Funding for War With Iran, Repeal 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today called for a vote on two bills that would repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force(AUMF) and prohibit any funding for offensive military force against Iran without congressional authorization. The bills led by Representatives Barbara Lee (D-California) and Ro Khanna (D-California) respectively passed the House with bipartisan support as amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) last summer but were taken out of the final bill by Senate Republicans.

“Congress must take back its constitutional war powers authority to prevent an unauthorized conflict with Iran. Not only should the House approve a strong War Powers Resolution, we should use the power of the purse to stop this President from taking impulsive action to get us into another catastrophic war in the Middle East,” said Pingree.

Pingree plans to vote in favor of the War Powers Resolution for Iran announced by Speaker Pelosi earlier this week.
