Pingree Announces $915,000 in Grants to Provide Transitional Housing for Domestic Violence Survivors

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced two Maine organizations will receive grants from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), totaling $915,000. These grants are a part of the Transitional Housing Program, designed to provide aid to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are in need of housing assistance as a result of experiencing violence.

“The Violence Against Women Act has helped countless women in Maine to live a safe, fulfilling life, free of the threat of domestic violence no matter where they live. Still, the rate of domestic violence is far too high in Maine and across the country, and federal funding is critical to addressing the problem head on. I’m proud this VAWA funding will come to rural parts of Maine, where alternative housing is critical to escaping a unsafe relationship,” said Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

Details of the grants are as follows:

- Caring Unlimited Corporation, Sanford, Maine($400,000): Caring Unlimited is a non-profit organization located in Sanford, Maine, a rural region of the state. The organization will provide 11 program-owned units and rental assistance for four scattered-site housing units. Caring Unlimited will collaborate with its two partners, Sanford Housing Authority and York County Community Action Corporation, to provide a holistic, victim-centered, and multidisciplinary approach to provide services including rental assistance, case management, financial and credit counseling, and job training.

- New Hope For Women, Rockland, Maine ($515,000): New Hope for Women is a non-profit organization located in Rockland, Maine, a rural region of the state. The organization will provide five scattered-site residences for five survivors and their families through private landlord housing units. New Hope for Women will collaborate with its partner New Ventures Maine to provide a holistic, survivor-centered, and multidisciplinary approach to transitional housing needs in the community.
