Yarmouth High Student Wins 2020 Congressional App Challenge for Maine’s First District

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced today that Yarmouth High School junior Elena Miller has won the 2020 Congressional App Challenge Maine’s 1st District. Her submission “Scoregenix” is a way for athletes, coaches, and spectators to keep track of scores during baseball and softball games.

“The Congressional App Challenge is an opportunity for Maine students to showcase their technological skills and creativity before a national audience. Each year, I am impressed with the cutting edge innovations they come up with,” said Pingree. “Ms. Miller’s app Scoregenix will help every baseball and softball spectator to better understand the game they love. Congratulations to Elena Miller on winning the 2020 Congressional App Challenge for Maine’s First District.”

In Miller’s submission, she detailed how scorekeeping for baseball and softball takes time to learn and is confusing, making it hard to find volunteers to “keep the book” for games. Developed to eliminate the need to learn how to "keep the book", Scoregenix is an easy way to record what happened during a game without becoming confused or overwhelmed. Scoregenix simplifies this process using easy-to-understand push buttons and menus. After the game, Scoregenix exports a spreadsheet with each teams’ information for the user to save and store.

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition. Members of Congress must choose to participate for students in their District to be eligible. Winning apps from each District will be displayed and recognized at an event in Washington, D.C. this spring. The Internet Education Foundation coordinates the competition.
