Pingree Statement on COVID-19 Memorial
Washington,
January 19, 2021
As President-elect Biden hosts a vigil for victims of the coronavirus at the Lincoln Memorial, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement: “Tonight we mourn over 400,000 Americans, including hundreds of Mainers, who were robbed of their lives by coronavirus. Many spent their final days in isolation and said goodbye to their loved ones through a cellphone. This unfathomable loss has taken a devastating toll on our society. With a new administration, we must do everything we can to prevent more Americans from suffering from COVID-19 and end this pandemic. “In October, Dr. Fauci warned that if proper precautions were not taken, America would hit this tragic milestone we now mark. In the last four weeks alone, our nation’s death toll has spiked in large part because the Trump administration has repeatedly undermined basic public health initiatives and failed to establish a cohesive, transparent vaccine distribution plan to states. Better days are ahead of us because beginning tomorrow our nation will be led by a government with a comprehensive plan to get the vaccine into people’s arms as fast as possible and committed to help the nation recover from this catastrophic pandemic. We have no time to spare.”
