With Vote Establishing January 6 Select Committee, Pingree Says ‘Protecting American Democracy Cannot be a Partisan Issue’

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today voted to approve H. Res. 503, which would establish a bipartisan Select Committee to investigate the January 6 domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex. The Committee will be comprised of 13 Members of Congress, five of whom shall be appointed after consultation with Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Upon concluding the investigation, the Select Committee will issue a final report to Congress with findings, results and legislative recommendations.

“January 6, 2021 remains one of the darkest days in the history of our nation. The sight of rioters ransacking the United States Capitol as we attempted to do our constitutional duty to certify the presidential election shocked the world and has done incalculable damage to our national identity. We have not for one day forgotten what happened. For several months we have tried in good faith to work with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to form a bipartisan panel to find out exactly what happened on that terrible day. While our colleagues have refused to work together in good faith, that does not free us of our duties to find the truth. That is why establishing this select committee  is so important. I am deeply disappointed so many of my Republican colleagues voted against this investigation. Protecting American democracy cannot be a partisan issue. We have a solemn responsibility document January 6 both for the present and for posterity. It is among the most vital work we will ever do in Congress,” said Congresswoman Pingree.

On May 19, the House passed H.R. 2333, legislation to establish a nonpartisan National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol – with an overwhelming majority (252-175) including 35 Republicans. Senate Republicans blocked the establishment of an outside commission.
