Pingree: Ahead of Thanksgiving, Child Tax Credit put $27.2M in tax cuts back in First District families’ pockets

Child Tax Credit tax cuts are helping hardworking Maine families afford gas, groceries in time for the holiday

PORTLAND, ME —  Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today welcomed a new report from the Joint Economic Committee estimating that 66,000 Child Tax Credit monthly payments were sent to families in Maine’s First Congressional District the week before Thanksgiving. A total of $27.2 million in tax cuts went back in the pockets of hardworking Maine families, covering 106,000 First District children in November.

“For far too long, working families have been left behind by policies that have not kept up with their needs, but our current Congress and the Biden Administration are working to finally change that,” said Congresswoman Pingree. The expanded Child Tax Credit is putting more of hardworking families’ own money back in their pockets to afford rising costs. Hundreds of dollars in tax cuts for Maine families the week before Thanksgiving means gas in the car for that trip to grandma’s house or extra grocery money to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table.”

“Everyone benefits when parents can afford childcare, food, and basic needs,” Pingree continued. “The House’s recent passage of the Build Back Better Act, which extends the child tax credit and helps more than 35 million families, showed there’s a strong appetite in Congress to continue this safety net. It’s my hope we can make this tax credit permanent and continue helping working families across the country.”

Statewide, 131,000 monthly tax cuts went to families in November for a total of $55.5 million. The average tax cut was $423. Nationwide, the Treasury Department has distributed nearly $16 billion to the hardworking families of over 61 million children.
