Initial contract for repair of USS Miami awarded to General Dynamics

$94 million agreement will allow Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to begin planning for repair and overhaul of fire-damaged sub

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said today that the Navy has awarded a $94 million contract to General Dynamics for planning and preliminary work repairing the USS Miami.  The total price tag for repairs to the sub, which was damaged in a fire earlier this year, is expected to be in the range of $400-$450 million.

"There is an enormous amount of work to be done to fix the Miami so it can safely go back to sea, but I have no doubt that if anyone can do it, it's the men andwomen at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard," Pingree said.

Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said about a third of the work in this initial contract will be done in Kittery, with General Dynamic facilities in Virginia, Rhode Island and Connecticut assisting.

"There is going to be plenty of work for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and it's clear that private industry partners like General Dynamics are key to getting the sub repaired and back in the fleet," Pingree said.
