Pingree Celebrates $47.5 Million in Transportation Money Awarded to Maine

Funding comes from historic legislation passed last year by Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today celebrated an announcement by the Biden administration that Maine will receive $47,583,555 in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds that can be used by state transit agencies to support Maine public transit. Around the country, states are receiving about 58% more in transit funding than in years past, thanks in large part to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed by Congress last year.

The funding is part of over $20 billion announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation and includes investment from both the Mass Transit Account of the Highway Trust Fund and advance appropriations provided by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed by Congress.

“As one of the most rural states in the nation, Mainers rely on state roads, highways, and bridges to stay connected, but too many are badly in need of repair. In fact, there are 315 bridges and over 1,438 miles of highway in poor condition in our state and these overlooked road repairs cost Maine drivers approximately $543 per year,” said Congresswoman Pingree. “I proudly voted for the historic 2021 transportation investment bill to create safer roadways and save Mainers money in the long run. I’m thrilled to see this huge increase in transportation funding coming back to our state.”

On November 5, 2021, Pingree voted with the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the IIJA, which was signed into law by President Biden on November 15.
