After today’s historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement:

“In a time of great cynicism, today’s confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to America’s highest court is a bright moment for our country. For decades, the Supreme Court has lacked balance: balance in gender, balance in race, balance in life experience, balance in perspective, balance in judicial compassion and moderation. Justice Jackson’s elevation will help restore needed balance in ways that could benefit generations of Americans. 

“This is the most conservative Supreme Court in over a century. Justice Jackson’s voice will be critical to halting the radicalism of right wing, partisan justices bent on imposing a dangerous vision of the world. With our civil and reproductive rights, freedom from pollution and gun violence, and entitlement to a vibrant democracy on the line, I am heartened Justice Jackson will be on the frontline standing up for all of them. What a special moment for the United States. Think of all the young women watching today who will be inspired. I’m inspired.”
