Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced that Addison (Tadd) Nelson of Bath has accepted an offer to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Pingree nominated Tadd to the Academy in December.

“Acceptance to a U.S. service academy is extremely competitive and reflects highly on a student’s scholarship, community service, and character,” said Pingree. “Along with all the other Maine students I nominated, Tadd has demonstrated an incredible commitment to serving the country and a maturity well beyond his years. I’m very proud that he was accepted to the Merchant Marine Academy and wish him the very best in his time there.”

“The Academy would give me a path to become either a Naval officer or a Coast Guard officer,” Tadd wrote in his letter requesting a nomination. “I believe by attending an academy I will have the best chance to become a pilot while giving me a world class education and preparing me to be the best officer I can be for the country.”

Tadd is a senior at Cheverus High School in Portland. His parents are Douglas and Jennifer Nelson. Contact information is available on request. A photo of Tadd is available for download here.

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes Members of Congress.
