Pingree Statement on Latest Federal Trump Indictment
Washington,
August 1, 2023
Former President Donald J. Trump was indicted on Tuesday in connection with his widespread efforts to overturn the 2020 election following a sprawling federal investigation into his attempts to cling to power after losing the presidency to Joe Biden. In response to Trump’s unprecedented third indictment this year, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement: “On January 6, 2021, American democracy came under attack by armed mobs set on overturning the presidential election results and overthrowing our government. Those mobs and those goals were directed by Donald Trump. If today’s federal indictment of Donald Trump is unprecedented that is because his crimes were unprecedented. At present, the leader of the Republican Party and the overwhelming frontrunner to be that party’s nominee for President next year, is facing three separate criminal indictments totaling over 70 state and federal charges. It is unfathomable, and itself an indictment of the Republican party. But today, at long last, our nation sees a possibility of accountability for Donald Trump. I thank the prosecutor Mr. Smith and the members of the grand jury for their courage. Justice can only survive if our highest leaders face accountability for their crimes. Today’s indictment shows the enduring strength of our rule of law." ###
