Michaud, Pingree and King forwarded name to White House

Today, Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree praised the White House announcement that President Obama has nominated Justice Jon Levy of Maine to be a District Court Judge in the District of Maine to replace the Honorable George Z. Singal, who took senior status on July 31st. Additional biographical information provided by the White House on Justice Levy can be found below.

"The diverse screening panel we convened did a thorough job, and we're pleased that the President has chosen one of the names we forwarded to him for consideration. All three of the candidates we recommended to the White House have extraordinary legal backgrounds. Jon Levy is extremely well qualified to follow in the respected tradition of Judge George Signal, and we're hopeful the Senate will move forward with the confirmation process as soon as possible," said Michaud and Pingree.

In February, Michaud, Pingree and Senator Angus King formed a judicial screening panel that interviewed fourteen applicants for the judgeship vacancy. This process led to three recommendations: Jon Levy, an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in Portland; William Robitzek, an attorney with Berman & Simmons in Lewiston; and Jeffrey Young, an attorney with McTeague Higbee in Topsham. Justice Jon David Levy: Nominee for the United States District Court for the District of Maine

Justice Jon David Levy has been an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court since 2002. Justice Levy previously served as a Maine District Court Judge from 1995 to 2002, during which time he served as Deputy Chief Judge from 2000 to 2001 and Chief Judge from 2001 to 2002. Prior to joining the bench, Justice Levy worked in private practice in York, Maine from 1983 to 1995. From 1981 to 1982, he was appointed by Judge William W. Justice to serve as a Special Court Monitor of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Justice Levy began his legal career by clerking for Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. of the United States District Court in the Southern District of West Virginia from 1979 to 1981. He received his J.D. in 1979 from the West Virginia University College of Law and his B.S. in 1976 from Syracuse University.
