Pingree speaks to crowd of hundreds gathered to oppose ban on GMO labeling

Bill would block laws in Maine and other states requiring labels on food containing GMOs

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree spoke to hundreds of people from around the country who gathered in Washington today to oppose a bill that would ban GMO labeling laws.

"You are here representing the 90% of American people who wantto know what's in their food," Pingree said. "Thank you for making your voices heard."

A bill being called the “Deny Americans the Right-to-Know” or DARK Act had a hearing today in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The bill would prevent states like Maine from requiring the labeling of foods containing GMO ingredients.

The Maine law, passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor LePage this year, would require labeling when five nearby states also adopt similar requirements.

Currently 64 other countries around the world require labeling of GMO food. Polling shows nearly all Americans support a similar requirement, but large corporations, like Monsanto, that produce GMOs have fought labeling laws and support the bill now in the House.

Dozens of Maine people were set to travel to the rally by bus, but the trip was canceled due to weather.
